This music video, Hans Zimmer Masterclass Film Score Writing Assignment: Question and Answer, is my answer to Hans Zimmer’s first masterclass assignment. In Lesson 1, HZ makes the point that many musical scenes are really comprised of a series of questions and answer phrases – musically speaking that is. Sometimes the answers are not made readily available by the composer – which can create tension and suspense. We are familiar with this concept in classical music, when a musical statement is made and then an attempt is made to reply – hopefully in an interesting way. Students were asked to write this question and answer musical dialogue by choosing a scene from one of our favorite movies and writing our own music to it. I chose the closing scene from one of my favorite movies starring Tom Hanks, Paul Newman and Jude Law. To fit the scene, the music had to have a slower tempo and starts off with a minor-ish chord progression. It isn’t heavy minor, just mildly so, because we do get a pickup in mood at the very end. I found myself transitioning from minor to major.I highly recommend the movie, the soundtrack and the Hans Zimmer masterclass. I learned a ton from one of the most experienced film composers ever. HZ is inspiring and tells it like it is. All aspiring film composers (and songwriters) shoud take HZ’s masterclass.
