Brainstorming Word Association exercise

Start with a keyword or keywords that most likely will become the title of your song. Next, jot down all the images, phrases, and thoughts that come to mind, branching off the central idea.

Connect the most relevant idea(s) to build the chorus and flesh out the verses around the outline of the story!

Plenty room for lyrics

There are ample blank lined pages to work on preliminary drafts as well as the final rendition of your lyrics.

Use the brainstorm/word association exercise as a guide.

Smooth music workflow

The Songwriters Journal comes with 105 blank music notation pages - each with chord diagrams, 4 sets of combo treble clefs + guitar tab staves, as well as lines beneath the tabs for penciling in your lyrics alongside the music.

The process of songwriting is as unique as your music.

Some tips from some of the most successful songwriters of all time...

Taylor Swift

The more it seems like a journal entry, the better. The more it seems like an open letter, the better.

John Legend

I have a structured songwriting process. I start with the music and try to come up with musical ideas, then the melody, then the hook, and the lyrics come last. Some people start with the lyrics first because they know what they want to talk about and they just write a whole bunch or lyrical ideas, but for me the music tells me what to talk about.

Mark Knopfler

Each song has its own secret that's different from another song, and each has its own life. Sometimes it has to be teased out, whereas other times it may come fast. There are no laws about songwriting or producing.
